Why J&J Woodcraft?

In 2001, my dad was diagnosed with Prostate cancer and so had an operation to remove his prostate. Even without a prostate he continued to have the cancer which, in 2012, spread to his spine.

Dad

He was always happy working with wood – when he retired he intended to take up woodturning and was given a nice set of wood turning chisels on his retirement. Due to his health he never got a chance to turn any wood. He did however make a small collection of various pieces of wood to be turned.

In November of 2017 my dad finally lost his fight with the cancer.

The reason the company is called J and J Woodcraft is because my dad was called Gordon (Jimmy to his friends) and I am Jason. It therefore stands for Jimmy and Jason Woodcraft so he is associated with all the items I produce. I am turning items using his chisels that he never got the chance to use.

For my 50th birthday, I got a lathe and took a woodturning course with  Tracy Owen; the branch does not fall far from the tree (excuse the pun).

Not long after starting to turn I joined Woodart Workshop in Frodsham which meets every other Thursday. The club is for wood turner and wood carvers providing support, training and demonstrations. At the beginning of 2020 the club held a 6 week exhibition at a local gallery with work from members of the club and I was lucky enough to have some of my items included.

Since starting I have also produced a number of items  to support various charities (MacMillan, Cancer 52, Cancer Research UK and Mental Health Foundation) helping to raise over £5,000

If you like some of the items shown in the gallery please contact me if you would like similar items produced.
